# Indoor vs outdoor car storage

An outdoor spot with a good cover gets many cars through a winter. Indoor storage costs more and takes snow, salt and sun out of the picture. Here is how to choose.

## Side by side

| Type | Starting price (Toronto) | Protection | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outdoor spot | from $99/month | Open air. Bring a cover. | A spare car you can wash in spring |
| Covered parking | from $135/month | Roof, open sides | Cars that need shade and snow off the roof |
| Indoor, unheated | from $200/month | Walls and a roof | Most seasonal and second cars |
| Heated or climate-controlled | from $250/month | Walls, a roof and temperature control | Classics, exotics, cars with delicate trim |
| Private 10 x 20 unit | from $270/month | Your own door | A car plus tools, tires, parts |

Starting prices in CAD before tax, from published storage rates and market estimates, October 2026. The facility, your car and the dates set the final price. Other regions are on the [pricing page](https://car-storage.ca/pricing/).

## Who needs what

- A daily car you will drive again in April: Outdoor or covered is often enough, with a cover and a battery plan. See [storing a car outside](https://car-storage.ca/guides/storing-a-car-outside-in-winter/).
- A summer or weekend car: Unheated indoor is the usual choice. See [summer car storage](https://car-storage.ca/vehicles/summer-car-storage/).
- A classic or an exotic: Heated or climate-controlled indoor, or a private unit. See [classic cars](https://car-storage.ca/vehicles/classic-car-storage/) and [exotics](https://car-storage.ca/vehicles/exotic-car-storage/).
- An electric car: Dry and ventilated, with the manufacturer’s battery advice followed. See [EV long-term storage](https://car-storage.ca/guides/ev-long-term-storage/).
- A condo second car: Whatever fits the budget, since the car mostly needs a legal place to be. See [condo second-car storage](https://car-storage.ca/vehicles/condo-second-car-storage/).

## The cheap checks

Whatever you pick, the car should be washed, with the tank full and the battery handled. See the [winter checklist](https://car-storage.ca/guides/how-to-store-a-car-for-winter/). For prices side by side by city, see [car storage cost](https://car-storage.ca/guides/car-storage-cost-canada/).
