Spring car prep after storage

In April the car needs a quick check before you drive it: battery, tires, fluids, brakes, and whatever you plugged against mice. Ask for spring prep and delivery in the request, and the car comes back ready.

Spring check, in order

  1. Look underneath and inside

Signs of mice, leaks under the car, anything chewed.

  2. Remove the plugs

Exhaust and intake plugs out, before the first start.

  3. Battery and tires

Charge or refit the battery. Set tire pressure back to normal.

  4. Fluids and brakes

Check levels. The first few stops may grind as surface rust clears from the rotors.

  5. Wash and drive

A wash, then a gentle first drive.

Spring questions

When should the car come out of storage?

After the last salt on the roads, usually mid to late April in Ontario and Quebec, later on the Prairies.

Do I need to reinstate my insurance first?

If you reduced coverage while stored, yes, before the car goes on the road. See insurance while stored.
