How much car storage costs in Canada

Outdoor parking is the cheapest, a heated indoor space the most expensive, and a city like Vancouver or Toronto costs more than Winnipeg or London. Here are starting prices and what drives them.

What changes the price

Protection

Outdoor is cheapest. Covered parking costs a little more, unheated indoor more again, and heated or climate-controlled the most.

City

Vancouver is the highest in our table and Winnipeg and London are among the lowest. Space near downtown is scarce.

Private or shared

A private 10 x 20 unit usually costs more than a shared indoor spot, but the car, tools and tires can stay behind one door.

Length of stay

Short stays often cost more per month. A prepaid winter can cost less. Ask for both. See short-term storage.

Extras

Pickup and delivery, a battery tender (from $20/month), a wash before storage (from $75) and spring prep (from $100) are separate lines.

A worked example

A Toronto owner stores a car for five months, November to March, in an unheated indoor space. At from $200/month that is about $1,000. Add a battery tender at from $20/month for five months, about $100, and a flatbed each way at from $150 one way, about $300.

That comes to about $1,400 before tax. A winter package in the same city starts from $1,250 per winter and may bundle some of those extras, so ask what is in it.

Cost questions

What is the cheapest way to store a car for winter?

An outdoor spot, starting from $65/month, with a good cover. It is also the least protected. See storing a car outside.

Is heated storage worth it?

For a classic, an exotic or a car with delicate trim, many owners think so. For a daily-driver’s second car, unheated indoor is often enough. See indoor vs outdoor.

Do I pay in advance?

Often some of it. Ask about the deposit, the billing period and what happens if you collect the car early. See how to compare quotes.

Does the price include tax?

No. Our starting prices are before tax.
